Ugandan artist, dancer and researcher Robert Ssempijja was the third Cavendish Arts Science Fellow at Girton College, 2023-24.
Ssempijja brought an interest in using movement to explore things that spoken language cannot always explain or that are too difficult to say out loud, drawing on connections at a sensory level. He raised decolonial questions about the nature of home and belonging, and our capacity to re-imagine how we live with uncertainty.

Inspired by his time in Cambridge and his encounter with bound states in Nobel Prize winning theoretical physicist Robert Laughlin's book A Different Universe, this work explores real and imagined boundaries and potential ways of re-imagining. It reveals some of the questions driving Sssempijja's engagement with physics, art and society.
